<p> Rising rock stars seem genetically predisposed to an ugly
affliction. Clinical name? Swollen Ego. But Eddie Vedder may be
an exception. At 26, the poet laureate of the wildly successful
Seattle band PEARL JAM remains refreshingly self-effacing. "I
wish we weren't on MTV, man. I just feel silly talking about our
band all the time," says Vedder, a contemplative sort who locked
himself in a windowless basement to produce the pensive lyrics
on Pearl Jam's debut album, Ten. Not surprisingly, the songs
depict a world spinning uncontrollably on an axis of alienation.
So far, the music has sparked love cries from the Sassy set and
raves among critics. Last week Ten hit No. 2 on the charts.
Meanwhile, Vedder, a grungy Adonis, remains astounded by the
band's popularity boom. "Every day something amazing happens."
